Animal & Bird Medical Center will be

Closing as of March 16, 2011

We have enjoyed taking care of your pets these past 13 years.  However, the physical demands of the job are significant, and the time is right for me to take a position that is less physically challenging.  I am a "big dog" person at heart, but when our many 130 lb patients seem to weigh 180 and our one 227 lb patient seems to weight 400 lbs, it is time to make an adjustment.

I will be moving out of the area, but will continue to be accessible at katie@animalandbird.com.

We will be taking care of records after March 10, 2011 and will let you know the details of that as the week progresses.

Please be sure we have your email.

If you are not sure we have it - please send it to katie@animalandbird.com

Please be patient with us as we close the clinic.

Pet Wellness

TWICE A YEAR FOR LIFE!

What is a "Wellness Exam?"

When you take your pet in for their yearly vaccinations and tests, Dr. Carpino does a wellness exam as part of your visit.  The process is quick and involves a 14 point check on your pet from nose to tail.

Twice a year wellness exams are extremely important because your pet ages approximately 7 yrs for each year of its life.  More importantly, they don't tell us anything is wrong until they are very sick (cats especially).  Of course there are the oversensitive and theatrical types who will work a minor problem for all it is worth.  But with that in mind - it is just as important to be sure that the problem is minor in those patients by having a history of regular Wellness Exams. We want to establish a regular baseline. We want twice-a-year exams to prevent or minimize disease and enhance your pet's quality of life and increase the length of their life.

A Dental Exam is included with each and every Wellness Exam. Periodontitis is one of the major diseases we see in both young and older pets.  In younger animals we want to screen for retained deciduous (baby) teeth.  These will need removal or they will result in loss of permanent teeth.  As your pet enters into adulthood, and ages further, it is critical that we keep up with removing tarter as it accumulates.

What tests and other care for your pet would we want to do in addition to the Wellness Exam?

Immunizations

Parasite check for intestinal parasites

Heartworm Check

Blood Panel (CBC)

Serum Chemistry Panel

Urinalysis

Additional Screening Tests for Older Pets

Osteoarthritis check - including radiographs

Chest Radiographs

Thyroid Check
