Onions, garlic & scallions (green onions)

Onions, and any foods in the onion family, can cause a severe, potentially fatal methemoglobinemia in your pet.  That means that they will get very anemic with both loss of red blood cells and with their remaining blood cells unable to function normally.  It has a rapid onset and rapid treatment is critical.

Why are onions toxic to your pets and not us?

We are able to metabolize the toxic substances in onions.  Your pet cannot.

How much is too much?

Assume any onion or onion products are too much.  Cooking up that steak with onions?  You may be indeed concentrating the toxic aspects of the onion.  Your lab just love playing with that great big round onion?  Not a good plan!  Remember that it doesn't just cause blood loss inside your pet, it make the remaining blood cells not work right.  All that stuff in old books about garlic and fleas?  Forget it!  NO ONIONS, GARLIC, or SCALLIONS or foods made with them.
