However, the physical demands of the job are significant, and the time is right for me to take a position that is less physically challenging. I am a "big dog" person at heart, but when our many 130 lb patients seem to weigh 180 and our one 227 lb patient seems to weight 400 lbs, it is time to make an adjustment. I will be moving out of the area, but will continue to be accessible at katie@animalandbird.com. We will be taking care of records after March 10, 2011 and will let you know the details of that as the week progresses. Please be sure we have your email. SENIOR CARE

Is your pet a senior? Is your pet geriatric? Just how old is your pet?

Often it is difficult to realize just how old our pets really are. They still chase the ball, or continue to keep the chair warm. But same as people, the body doesn't last forever. Same as people, we need to use lab tests and other diagnostics to figure out what is going on before it becomes a problem for your pet.

SENIOR/GERIATRIC MANAGEMENT PROGRAM:

We start with a physical exam. We then have a set of diagnostic tools to look within your pet. Because these procedures are so important, we are having a special this month that, when specific groups of tests are done together, it will greatly reduce the cost of doing these tests compared to doing them individually. This is Senior Pet Care Month and we want to give you the opportunity to take advantage of it.

Because these tests take some time, we are recommending in some cases to drop off your pet in the morning with a mid- or late-afternoon pickup. We know how stressful it can be for some older pets to be away from home so we will always minimize this stay whenever possible.

If you elect to do just a portion of the geriatric screen, we also have reduced rates for certain bloodwork testing & evaluations.

Geriatric Program Options

1. Best Care Package. We have put together a senior/geriatric screening package that does require a days visit for your pet at the hospital. We will do an examination, bloodwork, x-rays, urine testing and a fecal check. Depending upon the results we will recommend a specific treatment program and possibly additional testing.

Regular cost for these diagnostics if done individually is $291 for dogs, and $310 for cats. Until May 31, 2006, the package for either dogs or cats is $200. Best Care Dog. Best Care Cat.

2. Bloodwork evaluation. The bloodwork evaluation is included in the Best Care Package. In some cases we can elect to do just the blood evaluation, rather than the complete package.
