FLEAS !!!
VERY BAD FLEA YEAR !!!

What do you need to do?  We will post that on Thursday!  New Videos coming - also of Gracie.  Don't get too excited.  She still doesn't have any feathers to speak of.

Yes, FLEAS are creepy.  These fleas were obtained by taking a flea comb (fine toothed comb) and running down the back of a flea-ridden dog (yecchh).  They are in a zipper-locked plastic bag and you will note they are running around in circles because they can't jump up.  Look at the size of the back legs! They jump really high.  They can jump from the ground onto your dog.  Then they can jump onto you next if you disturb them.  The only good flea is a dead flea! Click on the picture of the fleas to see the video of live (and dead) fleas.  More to come.
Meet Dr. Carpino So far, so good on the video stuff.  We are working on a heartworm segment, and one on how to pill a dog and how to pill a cat.  Below is our first one on which is a case you can follow.  If you have any suggestions, please let us know at Katie@animalandbird.com.   Remember Katie is handling our email - so please cut her some slack on typing back emails to you :-).
Gracie Day 1 Video Gracie is a Scarlet Macaw with a severe neck injury and full body feather picking.  She was donated to the clinic and so we are going to try to get her better and post update videos at various intervals.

   SWINE FLU SPECIAL ALERT

H1N1 Swine Flu virus has now been

diagnosed in a dog in NY.

It had recently been diagnosed in 1 cat in Iowa, and 2 cats and 3 ferrets in Oregon.  One of the cats died as a result of the infection.  It is believed that in each of these instances the pets got the virus from humans.  No evidence of further transmission from pets to owners is apparent.  Note: This is not the same as the H3N8 canine influenza virus. See News Items at the American Veterinary Medical Association site.

There is now a test available for H1N1 in pets.  So if your becomes sick with a respiratory signs and fever in a short timeframe after a household member has had swine flu - we should check your pet for this virus along with supportive care.
